1. Pack Well in Advance
Packing up the contents of your home and putting all the possessions you own into boxes can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be if you are organised. Don’t underestimate how long packing will take, it can get very stressful if you leave it until the last minute. Start well in advance and do a bit each day to make the process less overwhelming.
2. Make Sure You Have Enough Boxes
Make a calculation of how many boxes you are likely to need well in advance as you don’t want to run out part way through packing. Make sure you have a variety of different sized boxes to cater for different items. Other things you might need include, bubble wrap, newspaper, strong tape and marker pens.
3. Label All Your Boxes
Make sure you label all your boxes as this will make unpacking a lot easier. Use a marker as opposed to a pen or pencil as this will be a lot clearer to read at a glance. Make sure you label the sides of the boxes and not the top so that you can easily read the labels when the boxes are stacked. You can even colour code the boxes using a different colour for each room so that it’s easy to see where each box goes when you get to your new property.
Sorting through items you no longer want or need is an additional job to add to the already time consuming task of moving home. If you have possessions that you no longer need and items that you don’t wish to take to your new property, decluttering in advance is a good idea. You can give items such as clothing and books to charity, or sell unwanted items on Ebay. You could even hold a garage sale or attend a car boot sale to help declutter before the move.
5. Keep a Box of Essentials to Hand
There is nothing more frustrating than packing up the contents of your home and realising that there is something that you need buried deep in a box full of your belongings. Remember to keep essentials to one side and keep an extra box handy to pack these up on
moving day. Don’t forget to keep your essentials box handy as you will probably want to unpack this first when you move into your new property.
6. Don’t Pack the Boxes Too Heavy
It may be tempting to fill all your boxes when you are packing but make sure you don’t pack them too heavy as they will be difficult to lift. You should also make sure you use strong, good quality boxes to avoid them breaking during transportation. You can buy boxes that are specifically for moving home from numerous different retailers.
7. Keep Fragile Items Safe
Packing breakable items with care is essential to avoid any damage during the move. Use plenty of bubble wrap to add extra padding and pack tissue paper or newspaper into the boxes containing breakable items to fill in any gaps. Take extra care when stacking the boxes and be sure to place heavier, bulky items at the bottom.
8. Make Sure Your Contents Are Insured
Sometimes damage can occur no matter how well you pack your items. Check that your contents are insured well in advance and make sure that your policy will cover you for any accidental damage.
9. Get Friends and Family to Help
There is no doubt that moving house can be stressful and packing takes a lot of time. Involving your friends and family can help ease the pressure as well as make the experience a lot more fun. You can also involve the kids and get them to label or decorate their boxes as well as pack up their own belongings.
10. Use a Reputable Removal Company
If you have your own van or you have a friend who can lend you the use of a van you may not need a removal company, however most people require some assistance to transport their possessions to their new home. Choosing a good removal company is important to make sure the move goes as smoothly as possible without any problems. Get quotes in advance, look at online reviews and ask friends and family for recommendations to help you choose a reputable company.
